First baby shovelnose ray born in captivity in Australia
In January 2018, one of the island’s marine biologists, Nick Guinee, made the heart-warming discovery of a baby shovelnose ray in the stingray enclosure. Believed to be just the second to be born in captivity in the world, it’s a first for Australia.
Early breeding behaviour amongst the rays in Daydream Island’s Living Reef was witnessed in September. This demonstrating that the creatures felt comfortable and safe in their environment, which closely mimics their natural habitat.
The baby was measured at 34cm in length, and will take around 7 years to mature to an adult size of over 1.5m.
A competition to name the baby ray was run with local Cannonvale State School students.
Inspired by the Great Barrier Reef, the baby ray was christened “Barry” by the students.
